Abstract

Virginia Woolf is one of the more influential stream-of-consciousness primary writers of the 20th century. She lived in the Victorian era,a period in which England was an absolutely patriarchal society in which women lived in complete control of male power and had no rights at all. This characteristic was also reflected in the literature of the same period. However, in this particular social environment,Woolf did not stifle her enthusiasm for writing as a woman, but made her determined to fight against patriarchy. As a feminist, she focused on women's issues in almost allof her works, and can be said to be a pioneer of feminism. To the Lighthouse is Woolf's most successful and influential work,a quasi-self-transforming work to which the author devoted a great deal of effort. The novel takes a visit to the lighthouse as the central thread throughout the book, describing the life experiences of the Ramsey family and several guests before and after the First World War.
To date, there has been considerable research on various aspects of Virginiaat home and abroad, and the research trends are becoming increasingly diverse. According to previous studies of the novel, most of them are stream-of-consciousness studies, character analysis and symbolic analysis. In fact, there is still much room for research on Virginia's unique feminist thought and the richness and profundity of her fiction. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the three key characters in the work To the Lighthouse: Mr. Ramsey, Mrs.Ramsey, and Lily, in order to interpret the feminist ideas embodied in this work and to study more deeply the artistic characteristics brought by the feminist perspective to the novel.
