her” Images in Everything I Never Told You

Abstract:

The novel Everything I Never Told You is the Chinese-American writer Celeste Ng’s debut work. Its plot is fascinating; the writing is exquisite and the theme is profound.Since published, it has attracted widespread attention. The novel has not only become one of the best sellers in theNew York Times, but also won the 2014 Amazon Book of the Year. Throughout the study of the novel at home and abroad,it mainly focuses on the discussion of identity crisis, the comparative analysis of female characters, and the interpretation of Lydia’s tragedy as well as the family education in cross-culture; however, few people analyze the images of minority groups in the novel from the “Other” perspective. This thesis aims to analyze the “Other” images of Chinese Americans, females and homosexuals to reveal that how the “Other” finds the “Self”. The study finds that while constructing the “Other” images of theminority groups, Ng also tries to deconstruct the images of the “Other” and explore a way out for the minority group to find the “Self”. This plays a crucial role in studying Chinese-American literature form different perspectives.
