When it comes to functional equivalence theory,Nida defines it as: “From semantic to stylistic reproduction of the source text in the closest and most natural equivalent.’’1 “Functional equivalence’’ theory is the core of Nida’s translation theory.Since it was introduced to China in the 1980s,it has exerted a profound influence on Chinese translation theories and practice.
A.Nida’s Translation Thoughts
Eugene A.Nida is a famous American linguist, translator, and translation theorist.He has been praised as one of the most influential theorists in the field of translation.Nida is the first western translation theorist to be introduced to China and has made a great contribution to the development of Chinese translation research. The embryonic form of functional equivalence, “dynamic equivalence’’,first appeared in Nida’s Toward a Science of Translating published in1964, which also put forward two translation principles: formal equivalence and dynamic equivalence.
