Abstract

The story of Hua Mulan, a heroic woman in ancient Chinese literature, who took her father’s place in the army, fought bravely, defended her family and finally returned to her homeland, is a household name in China and is widely spread. In recent years, with the advancement of new media technology, the story of Mulan has attracted the interest of many film andtelevision producers, and more and more film and television productions are reproducing the image of Mulan and recreating her heroic deeds, such as the American animation film Hua Mulan made by Dy the Walt Disney Company in 1998 and the Chinese film Mulan shoot in 2009.

Films are cultural products created by a specific culture, and the messages it disseminates are based on a certain cultural background. Both films have made certain adaptations in the process of film and television adaptation of the story of Hua Mulan. Therefore, although the two films tell the same Chinese story, there are differences in the storyline setting and character design as well as in the core message of the films. This difference mainly comes from different interpretations of the same culture. To a certain extent, this interpretation also reflects the cultural differences that exist in different social structures.

Therefore, this paper explores the cultural differences behind the two filmsthrough a comparative analysis of the films from the perspective of cross-cultural communication, combined with Hofstede's cultural theoretical framework. The purpose of this paper is, firstly, to emphasize that film,a cultural product, can be an important text for interculturalcommunication research; secondly, this paper aims to provide a reference and bring certain implications for scholars who study cross culture through comparative film analysis.
