Abstract


In the history of American literature,there is no doubt that the Great Gatsby had a profound impact on American literature at the time. The United States after World War I entered a glorious historical period, and the economy and culture of the whole country have made great progress, so the United States has also leapt into the first world’s power. American society at that time was full of optimism, and the economic situation was in booming.At night, jazz played in the club bars echoed over the big city for a long time.Therefore, this historical stage, also known as the noisy "jazz age ".People pursue material wealth and advocate consumerism.Money becomes the motivation for people to pursue success.Wealth determines the quality of a person.The film’s critique of consumerism is very clear.At the same time, it also questioned the American Dream.This article analyzes the dialectical relationship between consumerism and the American dream.From the perspective of consumerism,this paper discusses the materialization and alienation of the main characters in the novel under the influence of consumerism. So as to actively deal with the consumerism culture of today’s society.
