| Title： An Analysis of Hawthorne’s Feminist Consciousness in The Scarlet Letter Major：英语 Abstract Hawthorne is one of the most influential novelists inthe history of American Literature in the 19th century. The birth of the scarlet letter has become an important step in the process of American literature. The novel takes Boston under the rule of Puritans in the 17th century as the background,takes the punishment of the adultery of the heroine Hester as the clue,discusses the inner world of women represented by Hester and their fate,and exposes the hypocrisy and cruelty of the rulers, and realizes that women can only be liberated in a real sense through self salvation. The author successfully creates a new image of rebelliouswomen who dare to love and dare to resist social customs. Hester's strong sense of resistance and pursuit of true love and freedom all reflect Hawthorne's feminist consciousness. Therefore, this paper aims to reveal Hester's feminist consciousness through herresistance to the society at that time and bravely facing difficulties Her feminist consciousness is embodied, which brings great significance to modern women's life.
